Harnessing the Art of Thermal Management

All light sources transform electric power into radiant energy and heat in various proportions. According to the Wikipedia online encyclopedia, a 100-watt bulb is 2.1% efficient, which means it produces about 2 watts of light and 98 watts of heat, whereas fluorescent lamps are said to be about 8.2% efficient. Contrary to popular belief, high-power light emitting diodes (LEDs) generate a significant amount of heat and are not 100% efficient.

Unlike traditional light sources, LEDs transmit heat instead of radiating it. Most of the heat from a LED goes upward into the fixture housing, which somehow needs to be dissipated from the system through conduction, convection or a combination of both methods.  If the heat is not dissipated properly, the light engine components will run at high temperatures, leading to shifting in color, lower light output and shortened life of the fixture, and thereby heavily compromising on warranty. Consequently, luminaire manufacturers need to design efficient thermal management systems that enhance the fixture performance and longevity.

Luminaire manufacturers prefer passive cooling technologies for LED fixture, as they require no energy for their operation. However, the issue with conventional passive cast or extruded heat sinks is that they can no longer fulfill demanding thermal needs in commercial and industrial LED applications. Their enormous weight and significant performance degradation with the rapidly advancing LED signifies that things need to change.

Active cooling technology offers thermal capabilities that are superior to passive heat sinks and also raises lumen output and longevity of solid-state lighting. energybank has mastered the art of harnessing the incredible energy of LED by combining the superior solid-state lighting with high-tech metal fabrication for enhanced optical performance and thermal management.
